With Engineer’s Week (E-Week) approaching on February 28th through March 5th, the ASHRAE Baltimore Chapter hosted a Green Building Technology program at the Engineer’s Club as a way to pair up students interested in engineering with technical folks across engineering disciplines. Over 60 students from four local Baltimore County and Baltimore City high schools participated. They learned about ASHRAE, the building industry, and the importance of engineering’s role in society. The program featured an activity enabling students to build and test windmill prototypes. Students were able to understand the power capabilities of real life windmills and the importance of renewable energy in a hands-on way.

Kaylee Haupt, who will take her PE test in the spring, is currently the chair of the chapter’s YEA (Young Engineer’s in ASHRAE) Committee and an active member of the chapter. This is the third year that she has volunteered for the student immersion program.

“I was once in their shoes in high school as I began to consider a career in engineering. It’s very rewarding to be able to guide students with so much potential and fuel their passion. Many students were rising juniors and seniors. They benefitted from interacting with professionals who have taken different paths from trade schools to four-year universities. I think they learned about the various roles in the building industry and that they have many options depending on their interests. It was a lot of fun and I was happy to participate!”
