BKM Hosts ASHRAE Baltimore’s Student Design Competition
The ASHRAE Baltimore Chapter organized and sponsored its annual High School Student HVAC Design Competition this past Saturday on April 7th. BKM hosted the event for the second consecutive year.
BKM’s Craig Parks and Jimmy Weaver (both active ASHRAE members) volunteered to help facilitate the event alongside Sam Philipp (JMT) and Rob Broczkowski (Mueller). Sam Philipp has been the Chair of this Committee for the past years and coordinated with the student participants.
The competition is open to all high school students to compete in teams of three to four. Each team is tasked with designing a mock HVAC office renovation, including: load calculations (by hand), duct sizing, and equipment selections. This year’s event drew 20 students from Baltimore Polytechnic Institute, Harford Technical High School, and Pikeville High School.
This event is a great opportunity for students to learn firsthand about HVAC design. The ASHRAE Baltimore Chapter continues to support the competition, because it allows students to be exposed to the building engineering field and speak directly with professionals in the workforce about careers in engineering and college programs. ASHRAE awards scholarships to seniors who apply and participate with an interest in pursuing engineering studies. Additionally, prizes and gift cards are awarded to the winning team.
