BKM provided MEP design services for the full renovations of the existing two-story student center building approximately 50,000-square-feet and construction of additions totaling approximately 14,000-square-feet.
The building houses the student center with multi-purpose rooms, various meeting rooms, classrooms, full-service kitchen, dining areas, loft, dance area, banquet hall, grand ballroom, fast food vendors areas, serving areas, a game room, offices, a bank and ATM, and other supporting areas. The building additions comprised of extension of the second floor lounge at the south side and a two-story wing at the northeast corner. The two-story addition houses the bookstore on the first level and a new fitness center on the second level. In addition, BKM provided a complete MEP renovation to the terrace, now called the Greenhouse, which was converted to a multipurpose gallery space used for lectures, presentations, and luncheons.
Entire building systems were replaced and upgraded including the HVAC chiller, boilers, several roof top air handling units. Plumbing systems were modified to accommodate renovated full service kitchen, new public toilets, and additional toilets in the building addition. Fire suppression piping was extended to the new additions. Electrical normal and emergency power distribution were upgraded including all new equipment and feeders, indoor and outdoor lighting, special systems such as fire alarm system. Lightning risk assessment calculations were performed and new lightning protection was provided. The project achieved LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
