BKM provided MEP design services for the 83,893-square-foot Ellicott City Roger Carter Recreation Center, a recreational facility including an aquatic center, gymnasium, climbing wall, fitness area with equipment, aerobics studio, and a running track.
It also includes multi-purpose rooms, activity rooms, and a preschool. Exterior program elements feature a beach volleyball court, children’s splash zone, sun bathing area, picnic and BBQ area, and a basketball court.
The project achieved LEED Silver. Its sustainable concepts included a highly efficient HVAC system, solar hot water for pool heating and the domestic hot water, and a rainwater collection system. Several mono-slope roofs oriented south for possible PV and solar hot water panels. High SRI roofs aided in the reduction of urban heat island effect.
